Day 12 — Carmen — 40 Days of Writing, Spring Session

I love that I can tell my hairdresser Carmen anything. Anything. She reacts, but doesn’t judge. She has been there with me through tears, anger and laughter, for over 18 years now. Throughout that time we have watched each other lose weight, gain weight, lose it again, and so on.

Carmen knows she can tell me anything as well; as far as I know, she does. She is also very honest about what I should and shouldn’t do with my hair. She has yet to steer me wrong.

What’s funny about our relationship is that, as well as we connect (we’re both Scorpios), we never hang out together outside of her work. We have had opportunities, but things have come up and kept us from following through. It doesn’t matter; seeing Carmen every 3-4 weeks is more often than I see most of my friends.

I told Carmen that if I ever wound up in the hospital for an extended stay I would need her to come and take care of my hair. Sounds vain, I know, but she agreed to do it, so why not?

I’m going to see Carmen in about 15 minutes. Not only will my hair look great when I leave her studio, I will have had a good therapy session.

Everybody should have a Carmen in his or her life.
