Day 25 — Motivation — 40 Days of Writing, Spring 2017

Today has been one of those days when my motivation has been sketchy. I stayed up way late last night, slept way in this morning , then once I was up, I was raring to go.

“Are you ready to get started on the fountain?” I asked Chuck. Due to a dead pump, the fountain in our front yard hadn’t worked since before Christmas 2016, and we finally had a combination of a free weekend, the motivation and the inspiration (Spring is here!) to get it functioning again.

Chuck could have gone much longer without the fountain working; but our front terrace is one of my favorite places to be, and I have gone way too long without the bonus of gurgling water and bird watching.

Not the easiest of tasks, fixing the fountain entailed digging up the portion of the yard where the electrical cord runs underneath to the outlet behind the wing wall. Moving a few keyhole pavers, rocks and netting (that helps to keep weeds and other growth from coming through the bricks) took some time, then disassembling the fountain, scrubbing, etc. It was a task in which we worked on and off throughout the day, wrapping it up about an hour ago.

My fountain is now gurgling once again, and I am looking forward to visits from enthusiastic birds who’ve probably missed it as much as I have.

It occurred to me as I settled down with a stack of magazines, glass of wine, cell phone and a couple of pups that I hadn’t written today. The thought started to harsh my mellow, and I thought, “What will I write about — that preferably starts with ‘M?’ I’m just not feeling that motivated, so why not skip a day, damn it?”

Motivation. It can come in waves, but eventually things do get done.

This one hit home for me. I have wanted to redecorate my guest restroom for a long time. I finally got all I wanted but still needed to fix nail holes and repaint. Last weekend got everything out, walls washed, holes fixed and sanded, we were just worn out and left the door off the hinges all week. Poor Rick had to go use the much nicer basement restroom. Which was ok except he had to climb stairs back and forth for a week. So finally got it done on Saturday!!!! We relocated the cat box downstairs and Rick has his nice freshly decorated restroom back. I ALWAYS use the master bath so it didn’t bother me.
